RedbikeBoy's Forum > telegram boy 1955-58

hi leicester ex red bike boys
i was a telegram boy in colchester essex from 1955-58, i missed my national service as the call up age stopped before my 18th birthday, this i did not mind as some of the other boys had been called up and came back to the office to see us after 6 weeks of training, not a pretty sight, short back and sides and a uniform miles to big, at least i could keep my hairstyle and look desent in a postmans uniform.
i became a postman after 3 years as a telegram boy, and went on to do another 22 years as a postman and postman driver. but in 1980 i was pensioned off due to ill health mainly to deafness and going off balance, after a few months my balance was sorted with medication but the deafness got worse but i get by ok ,thanks to the internet i can keep in touch with some of my olde mates by email, the phone is a no go .
for the next 25 years i became a ceramic wall and floor tiler, this was something i done on the side as a postman, with my balance sorted i could work again ,i retired april 2005.
i am still in pretty good health and very active. each year i always take part in the grandparents and parents race at my granddaughters sports day,but if i am honest i am always looking at the rest of the field in front of me as we head to the winners line, this don't go down very well with my wife as she thinks i am to olde to run and could have a heart attack.
i have written my memiors as a telegram boy for my local paper" IN LOOKING BACK"but wether it will ever see book form remains to be seen.

i have had a good life ,but when i look back the best years of my working life was a telegram boy ,those years i will always treasure, if only i could turn the clock back ,but this will be the nearest i ever get.

well done micheal for your book , which i shall purchase

lets hope your book will cause a lot of interest amongst other ex telegram boys. king regards
